Giovanni Battista Maini, Sepolcro di papa Innocenzo X Pamphili – Tomb of pope Innocent X Pamphili, chiesa di Sant’Agnese in Agone, 1727 – 1729

The church of St. Agnes was originally built to be the mausoleum of pope Innocent X and the tomb had to be placed in a privileged place. The place where we see it now is the result of many vicissitudes followed to the death of the pope. In 1698 it was decided to place it on the counterfacade above the main entrance.

The conclave tha elected Giovanni Battista Pamphli as Innocent X – september 15th 1644 – lasted 37 days, the longest after the one that elected Gregory XIV in 1591. He died on january 7th 1655 when was 81 years old. His body remained one day exposed in a room because none of his relative wanted to pay for the funeral. Only thanks to the generosity of the butler Scotti and the canonic Segni, which paid for the coffin and the burial, the pope was buried.

Giovanni Battista Maini was commissioned, in 1727, to sculpt the tomb. The pope is in the centre flanked by the Justice on the right and the Religion on the left. The first holds in its hand a sword and the second, wearing a mantle, holds a chalice with the Holy Host, and a cross.

In origine la chiesa di Sant’Agnese in Agone, dove oggi si trova la tomba, doveva essere il mausoleo di papa Innocenzo X ed il sepolcro doveva avere una posizione di rilievo ma la posizione in cui lo vediamo oggi non è quella pensata originariamente. Le vicissitudini seguite alla morte del papa portarono a collocarla in controfacciata sopra la porta d’ingresso principale.

Il conclave che lo elesse il 15 settembre 1644, durò ben 37 giorni e fu il più lungo da quello che elesse papa Gregorio XIV.

Morì il 7 gennaio del 1655 all’età di 81 anni e nessuno dei clienti voleva pagare le spese del funerale al punto che il corpo rimase esposto in stanza per un giorno. Solo grazie alla generosità del maggiordomo Scotti e del canonico Segni, che pagarono per la cassa e la sepoltura, il papa fu seppellito.

Nel 1727 Giovanni Battista Maini fu incaricato di realizzare il sepolcro che completò due anni dopo. Le due figure allegoriche al fianco del papa rappresentano la Giustizia, a destra, e la Religione a sinistra. La prima tiene in mano una spada e la seconda veste un mantello e tiene in mano un calice con l’ostia ed una croce.
