Dosso Dossi, Santi Cosma e Damiano, olio su tela, Galleria Borghese

The canvas, who dates back around 1520 – 1522, comes from the saint Anne hospital in Ferrara but we do not know who commisioned it and where was exactly. Someone think it was over an altar of a chapel of the hospital other think it had a private collocation as a professors meeting room.

The two saints, Cosma and Damiano, patrons of medicine are consulting and visiting the man seating in the foreground. He has his mouth opened and is going to be examined by the saint who holds in his hand a spatula. His colleague raises a glass to examine kidney stones in it. Other scholars identified the content of the glass as a tooth.

We do not know who is the woman which, in the background, seems leaving looking at us. Probably a nurse, the wife of the man or the person who sponsored the canvas.

On May 22nd 1608 the canvas arrived in the Borghese Gallery. Thanks to the correspondence between Rome and Ferrara we know that Scipione was deeply interested to this piece of art. The bishop of Ferara, hoping future favours, did everything he could to give him the canvas.

Il dipinto, la cui esecuzione si collocata intorno al 1520 – 1522, proviene dall’ospedale di Sant’Anna a Ferrara ma non ne conosciamo le vicende della committenza ne l’esatta collocazione. Alcuni studiosi pensano si trovasse sull’altare di una cappella ospedaliera altri propendono per una collocazione privata come una sala studio o una sala per le riunioni dei professori.

Vediamo i due santi, Cosma e Damiano, i protettori della medicina, in atto di consultarsi e visitare il malato seduto in primo piano. Questi ha la bocca aperta e sta per essere esaminato dal santo che tiene in mano una spatola. Il collega alza alla luce un bicchiere per esaminare dei calcoli in esso contenuti. Altri studiosi hanno visto nel contenuto del bicchiere un dente.

Non sappiamo chi sia la donna che, sul fondo, sembra allontanarsi guardandoci. Forse un’infermiera, la moglie del malato o la committente.

Fatto sta che il 22 maggio 1608 la tela giunse in Galleria Borghese. Dalla corrispondenza tra Roma e Ferrara sappiamo che Scipione era fortemente interessato all’opera. Il vescovo di Ferrara, nella speranza di futuri favori, si attivò per fargli arrivare la tela.
